Paperwork deters some U.S. residents from visiting their physician, according to a new study commissioned by IBM, Healthcare IT News reports.

According to the study, one in four U.S. residents has not scheduled a "wellness" visit within the last year.

Of those who have not had a wellness visit in the last five years, 33% say they waste time filling out repetitive paperwork at the physician's office. Meanwhile, 17% of those who have had a wellness visit in the last year also cite paperwork as a problem.

Online Health Record Access

The survey also found that 54% of respondents are interested in viewing their health records online.

According to the survey, 60% of U.S. residents ages 18 to 29 want online access to their health records, while 43% of U.S. residents older than age 50 want online access to their health records.

Online Physician Communication

Less than one-fifth of U.S. residents surveyed said their physicians use a Web site to communicate with patients.

Survey Details

The study is based on a phone survey of 1,000 U.S. adults conducted June 25 to June 29 by Braun Research.

Survey respondents comprised a representative sample of insured, underinsured and uninsured populations (Monegain, Healthcare IT News, 8/17).
